Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Physical injury to the brain often causes a precipitous drop in hormonal levels. Hormonal imbalances contribute to many psychological and physical symptoms following TBI such as:
- Impaired cognitive function
- Lack of energy
- Mood swings
- Sleep Deprivation
It has been shown to also cause pituitary insufficiency, hypopituitarism, growth hormone deficiency, and even neuroendocrine dysfunction. Those who have even experienced mild TBI have a higher rate of dementia, early onset Alzheimers, CTE, and even a higher risk of chronic heart failure. There has even been a link in major depression following mild traumatic brain injury.
Hormone replacement therapy at biological doses is used to rebalance hormone levels in the brain to reduce inflammation and create a neuro-permissive environment for the brain to heal itself.
It’s never fast enough for us, but studies are ongoing with hormone therapy to address the specific areas of reduced hormone production. These hormonal deficits cover hormones regulating the thyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands, growth hormone, and the sex hormones, estrogen and testosterone.
Researchers at the VA Puget Sound and the University of Washington found that up to 42% of veterans with blast injuries could suffer from low levels of pituitary hormones, causing some of the most troubling and lingering effects of mild TBI:
- Lessened Cognition
- Memory Loss
- Sexual Problems
- Mood Disturbances
The primary investigating physician on the study said this: “If PTSD does not resolve, it’s very possibly due to hormonal deficiencies”.
At the lnvictus Project, hormone replacement therapy is used as an adjunct therapy that is coupled with both ketamine infusions, to alleviate depression symptoms, as well as hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Following a complete blood panel to examine any and all hormone deficiencies, patients will be prescribed a hormone replacement regiment at physiological doses that will be self-administered to alleviate immediate symptoms, help improve cognitive function, improve memory stress neuronal plasticity, and decrease the risk associated with the long-term health risks after being exposed to even mild traumatic brain injury. Patients will receive blood panel follow up testing to ensure hormone levels are consistent and within a healthy range.
